Information about persons who are emotionally very close to
BASE participants was ascertained in the central intake assessment
(EE), as well as at measurement point 3 in the intensive protocol
(IP) social relationships questionnaire.
In the EE, participants were asked whether there are persons in their
life whom they are so close to, that life without them would be hard
to imagine, and who those persons are. This question pertains to
the first circle of the circle diagram (Kahn, & Antonucci,
1980) which was used in the BASE intensive protocol (see Social
network: Structure). The persons mentioned were coded as
partner, son, daughter, other family member, friend or other
person.
The recent loss of very close persons was assessed by a
single question within the EE. If participants said "yes" they were
asked, who had died. Those answers were coded as well.
In the IP, participants responded to a modified version of the
Relationship Closeness Inventory (QRI; Berscheid, Snyder, &
Omoto, 1989), answering questions about the person in their life
they feel most close to.
Additionally, information about very close persons are available from
the first circle of the circle task in the intensive protocol. There,
participants had to give the following details about each network
partner mentioned:
Gender, type of
relationship, age,
place of residence,
duration over the last five
years.

* The original English items were slightly modified in the German version to be more appropriate for use with older adults (however, the general type of activity remained the same). These items do not appear in the original questionnaire but were added in the modified BASE version because the Diversity subscale was intended to be modified to cover the range of common activities in the population under study (i.e., older adults in BASE).** These items do not appear in the original questionnaire but were added in the modified BASE version because the Diversity subscale was intended to be modified to cover the range of common activities in the population under study (i.e., older adults in BASE).
*** The Strength of influence subscale items were translated to express only positive statements in the BASE version of the RCI, whereas the original subscale also included negative statements (e.g., X does not influence...) to adapt the scale for the BASE sample. Furthermore, a highly shortened version of the Strength subscale was used in BASE.
